In Progress: Cleveland Rallies In Seventh, Leads New York 12-10 In Slugfest
Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Lou Marson finished 3-for-5 with three RBI as Cleveland used a seven-run seventh inning to down New York, 13-11, in the second of four between the clubs from Yankee Stadium.
Austin Kearns, Mark Grudzielanek, Matt LaPorta and Jason Donald each knocked in two runs for the Indians, who rallied from a 9-3 deficit and snapped a two- game slide including a loss in the series opener on Friday.
Rafael Perez (1-0) turned in a scoreless sixth inning in relief for the win. Kerry Wood allowed a run in the ninth but earned his second save.
Starter David Huff was forced to exit after 2 1/3 innings when he was struck in the side of the head by a line drive. He yielded five hits and three runs before departing.
Robinson Cano was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs, while Alex Rodriguez had a pair of hits and also knocked in three for the Yankees, who have dropped two of three. Francisco Cervelli added two RBI in defeat.
Joba Chamberlain (1-3) suffered the loss and the blown save, charged with four runs on four hits while retiring just one batter. CC Sabathia worked six innings, allowing seven hits and five runs with five strikeouts and two walks.
Marson’s run-scoring double in the sixth closed the Tribe’s gap to 10-5, then Cleveland responded with seven more in the seventh to take a 12-10 lead.
David Robertson hit Trevor Crowe, who stole second. Kearns drove him in with a single, forcing Robertson from the game with a lower back strain. Sergio Mitre entered and walked Jhonny Peralta before giving way to Damaso Marte. Marte retired pinch-hitter Russell Branyan before Chamberlain came on and allowed an RBI hit by Grudzielanek for a 10-7 game.
LaPorta walked to load the bases then Marson doubled home a pair. Donald followed with a two-run double before Crowe’s single chased home Donald to finish off the burst.
Branyan then reached the seats in the eighth for a 13-10 Indians advantage.
Wood walked pinch-hitter Curtis Granderson with one out in the ninth and Derek Jeter drove him in with a two-out double for a 13-11 game. However, Nick Swisher went down swinging to end the game.
The Yankees grabbed the lead with a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez.
New York increased its edge to 3-0 in the third on a Rodriguez RBI two-bagger made possible after the scorching line drive deflected off the side of the head of Huff, who had to leave the game on a stretcher. Aaron Laffey entered and immediately gave up a sac fly from Cano.
Cleveland tied the score in the fourth. With two on and two out, Grudzielanek laced a run-scoring single to left, then LaPorta followed with a two-run double to the wall in center.
New York responded with six runs in the home fourth. The bases were loaded on a single and two walks to open the frame, then Swisher drew a walk to put the Yanks up 4-3. Mark Teixeira was plunked to force in another run, and two batters later Cano stroked a two-run double.
Hector Ambriz came in and walked Marcus Thames to re-load the bases, then Cervelli laced a single to center which brought in two for a 9-3 game.
Kearns made it 9-4 in the fifth with an RBI single, but Rodriguez put the Bombers in double digits with a single in the home half.
This was a season-high for runs in one game by Cleveland, which had failed to crack double digits in any previous game this year...Branyan’s homer was his sixth of the season...Crowe finished 2-for-4 and scored twice...Rodriguez, who was given Friday night off, ended an RBI drought of seven games...Jeter, who made his major-league debut 15 years ago today, collected three hits and scored three times...Cano extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the first inning....Teixeira’s HBP in the fourth inning was his first RBI in 11 games.
