The Yankees have decided to skip Javy Vazquez’s next start - originally slated for Friday in Boston.
Struggling Javier Vazquez Won’t Make Next Start
Manager Joe Girardi said the team opted to bump Vazquez and give him extra time to “catch his breath.” Vazquez will next pitch Monday in Detroit.
The 33-year-old righty has struggled mightily in his second tenure in the Bronx. He is 1-3 with a 9.78 ERA and has surrendered eight home runs and 25 earned runs in just 23 innings.
The Yanks could afford to skip Vazquez on Friday because of an off-day on Thursday, which allows the other four starters to pitch on regular rest.
Vazquez didn't look too confident after allowing three homers and five earned runs in three innings against the White Sox on Saturday. He was booed off the mound by a cranky Yankee Stadium crowd.
“We’ll give him a couple days to catch his breath,” Girardi said Monday afternoon.
Maybe Curt Schilling was right. Maybe Vazquez, coming off a great year in Atlanta (15-10, 2.87 ERA) can't cut it in the American League.
He'll have a chance to bounce back Monday in Detroit against a Tigers team leading the league in hitting going into Monday's games.
