Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Dustin Pedroia belted a three-run homer, and the Red Sox went deep four times off Angels pitching in a 17-8 rout in the opener of a four-game series.
Red Sox Shake Off Weekend Sweep With Proper Throttling Of Angels
Mike Lowell had four hits, including three doubles and ended with four RBI. J.D. Drew added four hits and drove in three runs for Boston, which was swept in a three-game series at Baltimore over the weekend. Adrian Beltre and Bill Hall blasted two-run homers and Kevin Youkilis added a solo shot as part of a 20-hit attack in the opener of a 10-game homestand.
Clay Buchholz (3-2) was charged with eight hits and four runs over 5 2/3 frames to earn the win.
Joe Saunders (1-5) was pounded for nine hits and seven runs over four-plus frames and lost his third consecutive start. Matt Palmer and Brian Stokes weren't much better in relief as the duo combined to allow 11 hits and 10 runs in four innings.
Ryan Budde, Maicer Izturis and Howie Kendrick each drove in two runs for Los Angeles, which lost its fourth in a row.
Youkilis missed Sunday’s game against Baltimore due to a groin injury, but started strong a night later, blasting a 2-0 Saunders pitch over the Green Monster to lead off the second inning. Hall homered to left with Beltre on base later in the frame.
Youkilis was plunked and Drew singled with one out in the next inning. Lowell brought them both in with a double over the head of center fielder Torii Hunter.
A two-run double from Izturis and an RBI groundout from Kendrick made it a 5-3 game in the top of the fourth, but Drew singled in a pair in the bottom half.
Kendrick had a sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 7-4 game, but the Red Sox sent 11 men to the plate in their half and blew the game open with seven more runs. Youkilis doubled with one out and scored on a Drew base hit to center. Lowell followed with an RBI double and Beltre then blasted his first homer of the year, over the high wall in left. Pedroia homered with Darnell McDonald and Marco Scutaro on base later in the inning.
Lowell and Beltre had back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh and it became 17-4 after Beltre came home on a McDonald fielder’s choice.
The Angels scored four times in the ninth off Scott Schoeneweis - an RBI single from Reggie Willits, a sac fly from Kendry Morales and a two-run double from Budde.
It was a hat trick of victories for Boston sports teams Monday. The Bruins beat the Flyers, 3-2, in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series, while the Celtics topped Cleveland, 104-86, in the second contest of that playoff set...The Red Sox have won 12 of the last 15 starts from Buchholz.
