The Houston Offense. It Isn’t Good.

Between last night and tonight, the Astros managed one run in 11.2 innings, off Diamondbacks starters with two major-league wins between them. Houston are now averaging just 2.81 runs per game - there’s only one other team in the NL (Pittsburgh) at less than four. Since the mound was lowered after the 1968 season, only three teams have scored less over the first 26 games, than the Astros’ 73 runs.

  • ↵↵2004 Expos (55 runs scored, 107 allowed, went 6-20)
  • ↵1988 Padres (68 RS, 109 RA, 9-17)
  • ↵1981 Astros (72 RS, 68 RA, 12-14)

↵↵Tonight was the sixth straight game where Houston has scored two runs or less. That’s a streak that has only been surpassed four times in the 21st century. It was also their fifteenth such game in 26 contests this season. Not counting this evening’s contest, the team’s collective OPS+ is 61, and only three regular starters had an OPS over .600. I could go on, but it would be kinder just to take this topic outside and shoot it.

↵In the Houston Chronicle on Sunday, Zachary Levine wrote, “If the Astros can’t get their offense going against the pitching trainwreck that is/are the Arizona Diamondbacks, maybe they never will.” After one run in 18 innings, the score thus far appears to favor the trainwreck.
