Yankees Hoping Elbow Inflammation Won’t Force Andy Pettitte To The DL

Andy Pettitte left Wednesday’s game with pain in his elbow, but an MRI revealed only mild inflammation. As such, the Yankees are hoping that some anti-inflammatories do the trick, and that Pettitte only has to miss one turn.

“Right now the DL is not something that’s being considered,” general manager Brian Cashman said this afternoon.

For the time being, New York will replace Pettitte in the rotation with either Sergio Mitre or Alfredo Aceves. It could end up being as little as a single-start substitution, but there does exist the possibility that Pettitte takes longer to recover than is expected.

In their 20.2 combined innings out of the bullpen, Aceves and Mitre have struck out only four batters. A year ago, however, both were effective.
