This week has not been kind to the Cubs. Not that any week has this season, but this week included a sweep at the hands of the Pirates, the first time that’s happened since 2006. In case you’re not a Cubs fan who is forced to remember these things: Chicago went 66-96 that season.
Starlin Castro Will Save The Cubs, Or At Least Make Them Watchable
↵Now, Cubs fans have hope -- or at least a reason to keep watching as the season unfolds: Starlin Castro. In his first at-bat as a major leaguer, Castro hit a three-run home run. His third at-bat? Three-run triple.
↵For comparison’s sake, the Cubs’ regular shortstop Ryan Theriot has five extra-base hits 12 RBIs (and no home runs) so far this year. Sure, small sample size and all. But Cubs fans will take what they can get. Theriot, for the record, is now playing second.
↵Of course, the last Cub to hit a home run in his first at bat was a pitcher (Jim Bullinger). No, you probably haven’t heard of him. So let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.
