Edgar Renteria Hits The DL With A Strained Groin

WIth his surprising .316 average and competent play at shortstop, Edgar Renteria's been a valuable support piece for a Giants team that's taken a lot of people by surprise. However, he felt some tightness in his groin several days ago, and after re-aggravating the injury on Thursday night, Renteria is headed to the DL.

Renteria initially missed four games with the injury, originally suffered on April 30th. He made his way back into the starting lineup on Thursday, but had to be removed after two innings of play. Because he appeared, the Giants can’t make his DL stay retroactive to May 1st.

To fill Renteria's spot, the Giants promoted 26 year old Ryan Rohlinger from AAA Fresno. Rohlinger is batting .333 a month into the season, after batting .281 with 16 homers a year ago. While Renteria and second baseman Freddy Sanchez remain out, Rohlinger will share time in the middle infield with Juan Uribe and Matt Downs, who's gotten off to a blistering start off the Giant bench.
