Injured Players Highlight Slovakia’s Final World Cup 2010 Squad

Vladimir Weiss has named a number of recovering players to the final 23-man Slovakia squad that was announced early Tuesday.

Striker Filip Holosko has not been able to train with the team, still recovering from a broken leg suffered earlier this year. He made the team along with fellow strikers Martin Jakubko, Erik Jendrisek, Stanislav Sestak and Robert Vittek. Vittek has also been unable to fully train because of injuries.

In midfield. captain Marek Hamsik highlights a unit that includes prospects Miroslav Stoch and Vladimir Weiss, the coach’s son. They are joined by Kamil Kopunek, Jan Kozak, Juraj Jucka, Marek Sapara, and Zdeno Strba.

Central defender Martin Skrtel’s foot injury cost him most of his Liverpool season; however, he is in the final team, as are Marek Cech and Jan Durica. Other defenders named by Weiss include Peter Pekarik, Martin Petras, Kornel Salata and Radoslav Zabavnik.

In goal, Jan Mucha will be the starter, with Dusan Kuciaak and Dusan Pernis deputizing.

Slovakia is grouped with Italy, Paraguay and New Zealand in South Africa’s Group F. They open their tournament on June 15 in Rustenburg against New Zealand.
