“I think the cup will be one of the most straightforward in history, as you can see. I don’t see the big boys giving a lot of ground to smaller nations in terms of quality, and I do think Spain will prevail despite all the jinxes of being the hot team coming in.”

“2010 will be the first World Cup on African soil, and it should be remembered for the way it’s showing off a continent. Instead, when fans look back on the South Africa tournament, they’ll remember the dreaded noise of vuvuzelas—possibly before they remember any specific goals.

This cup will also be the first time that “fail whale” enters the vocabulary of soccer fans, as millions try to tweet their goal celebrations only to be met by the dreaded “Twitter is over capacity” message.

But most importantly, 2010 will be the year Spain break the curse and lift the cup.“

Richard Farley

Editor, SB Nation Soccer

Runners-Up: Uruguay, South Korea, Slovenia, Serbia, Japan, Paraguay, Portugal, Chile

“The last time the World Cup went to a new continent, South Korea and Turkey made shocking runs to the semifinals. This year, the first time Africa hosts a World Cup, we will see some similar surprises, but more than the effect of the new environment, we’ll see the effects of a leveling of the international playing field. The gaps between powers and fillers are smaller than ever, and South Africa gives some smaller nations a chance to illustrate this.”
