John Daly Reportedly Includes Children’s Charity in Lawsuit

When you hear “John Daly” and “ribs” in the same sentence, there’s probably some inclination to make a fat joke (although, as you can see in this recent photo, he’s definitely dropped some pounds), but this story of a 2007 rib injury probably isn’t all that funny to the people on the wrong end of a $100 million lawsuit.↵↵The Palm Beach Post reports Daly is suing the owners of PGA National Resort, the PGA Tour and Children’s Healthcare Charity. You can read the suit here (PDF file). Basically, Daly’s complaint is that there was a woman who was considered a security risk at the tournament. Daly’s team alerted officials numerous times. The third time officials were warned, security guards “took control of the patron that was the security risk, but did not remove her from the area and did not remove her from the course.” More details from the suit.↵

↵↵⇥While John Daly was in the process of driving the ball, the woman jumped in front of him. In mid-swing, he saw the woman directly in front of him. In order to avoid hitting her with either the driver or the ball and to avoid either killing her or causing serious damage to her, he had to stop his swing, as a result he was injured.↵↵↵The suit goes on to describe that Daly’s ribs “popped out” and he has required injection surgery. Daly withdrew from the Honda Classic in 2007 when the incident took place.↵

↵↵Now, no one is alleging that Daly is faking an injury, but lumping a children’s charity into the suit? That’s cold and low-down if it’s true. (The PGA Tour and Children’s Healthcare Charity do not appear on the PDF of the suit, but the Palm Beach Post reports they were added later, which is why I add that caveat of “if it’s true.”) According to the report, the two sides are working on a settlement but the proposals only offer Daly “a fraction” of what he wants.↵

↵↵Between the weight loss and the reality show, Daly has made a run at trying to reclaim some of his public dignity, but if this suit is really going after a children’s charity, it’d be a huge step backward for him. ↵
