South Korea 2-0 Greece: Koreans Strong Against No Luster Greeks

Greece was beyond lackluster. The Greeks were no luster in losing to South Korea, 2-0, in Port Elizabeth, the first match of Group B play and the first win of the 2010 World Cup.

South Korea was ahead within seven minutes when a free kick given deep in Greece’s end led to a corner kick-like opportunity, converted at the far post after a flick-on to defender Lee Jung-Soo.

Throughout the first half the South Koreans continued to create opportunities through an open Greek midfield and a surprisingly porous back line. The best of the opportunities saw forward Park Chu-Young put in alone on goal only to have an oncoming Alexander Tzorvos deflect the shot over the cross bar.

Early in the second half the Koreans sealed their three points when Park Ji-Sung took advantage of a misplay from Greek defender Loukas Vyntra, went in alone on Tzorvos and coolly finished under the Greek `keeper to make it 2-0.

It was the last goal in a controlling performance from Korea. It was not perfect. They missed chances to put up a big goal difference, and Greece’s unimaginative play was still able to find players in the area. However, Greece never really threatened a goal, leaving Korea temporarily top of Group B.

South Korea’s next match is against Argentina on June 17. Greece plays Nigeria the same day.
