Today’s World Cup match between England and the United States was not a total disaster for England; it was just a tie against a team only six spots lower in the FIFA rankings. Those will happen.
Ill-Timed Commercial Shows Over World Cup Goal In England
It was, however, a truly aggravating match for English partisans. Consider these points:
- Nearly every shot after the first goal seemed to be directed straight at USA goalkeeper Tim Howard;
- The Americans' tying goal was so bad, the immediate sentiment about Robert Green was "well at least people don't get killed over that in England";
- Wayne Rooney played about as well as Andy Rooney;
- And as for England's goal, across the pond, fans didn't even get to see it happen; it was pre-empted by an inadvertent commercial break. Footage follows below the fold.
Obviously, this wasn’t an act of malice; that would require powers of prescience that, if possessed, would certainly not be wasted on something like this. And yet still, good heavens, that’s unfortunate.
At the very least, though, fans can feel safe in assuming that all these bad things have come all at once, and that they’re out of England’s system, and that the team’s still in very good shape to advance out of group play.
Then a power surge will disable all the electricity in London while Slovenia beats England 4-0. Don’t take it personally, of course; the soccer gods are just curious whether Wayne Rooney will actually grow that sensational beard like the commercial promised.
