After the completion of this weekend’s round of interleague games, the National League is holding its own against the American League, each having won 42 contests. Admittedly, they have been slightly lucky to have got the tie, since the Junior Circuit has outscored them by 28 runs - Pythagoras tells us that “should” convert to 45 wins for the American League. Still, it keeps them on pace for the best NL performance since 2003.
NL Hanging Tough In Interleague Play
A couple of teams appear to be responsible for the results so far: in fact, only three of the fourteen American League teams have losing records. However, the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles have combined to go 2-10 against the National League. The New York Mets and Colorado Rockies have been the big beneficiaries so far, each having won five of their six interleague games to date.
Breaking the results down by division, here are the W-L records, sorted by overall win percentage.
- NL West: 16-11 (0.593)
- AL Central: 17-13 (0.567)
- NL East: 15-12 (0.556)AL East: 13-17 (0.433)
- AL West: 12-12 (0.500)
- NL Central: 11-19 (0.367)
Obviously, it’s not an absolutely accurate statistic with regard to the strength of the various divisions, because of the unbalanced schedule. But the NL West has thus far done the best of any of the divisions. It’ll be interesting to see if that holds up in the next set of games, which see three of its members going up against the AL East - each division has four teams with winning records this season.
