Elena Dementieva Withdraws From Wimbledon With Calf Injury
From the AP:
Fifth-ranked Elena Dementieva has pulled out of Wimbledon with a calf injury.
Dementieva was injured at the French Open this month, forcing her to retire during her semifinal against Francesca Schiavone. She has still not recovered, she said on her website Tuesday.
Dementieva's original injury pushed the Italian, Schiavone, into the French Open final, which she would go on to win. She described the injury on her website after it first occurred:
I just have a tear in my left calf, so it's very painful to even walk. You know, I got it after my second match, so I just, you know, aggravate it during these matches. Today was just a sharp pain. It was a bit too much. Couldn't really move on the court.
Dementieva has reached the semi-final at Wimbledon in each of the past two seasons, losing to Venus Williams in 2008 and Serena in 2009. Wimbledon starts on Monday.
