Radek Stepanek, the 25th ranked man in the world, withdrew from Wimbledon Thursday morning siting a knee injury. The 31-year-old Czech player had his best effort in a major in 2006 when he reached the Wimbledon quarter finals.
Radek Stepanek, Ivo Karlovic Withdraw From Wimbledon
Radek Stepanek was ruled out of Wimbledon and the Czech Republic’s Davis Cup quarterfinal against Chile next month because of a left knee injury.
“His health problems are more serious than he expected,” Czech Davis Cup captain Jaroslav Navratil said in a statement posted Thursday on the website of the country’s tennis federation.
No. 18 Stepanek was seeded 22nd for Wimbledon, which begins Monday.
The world’s 33rd ranked man, Ivo Karlovic, has also withdrawn from the tournament with a foot injury. Karlovic, who is also 31, bowed out in the quarter finals of last year’s Wimbledon tournament. The 6’10” Croatian is known as having one of the most dangerous serves in the game.
