Seedings for Wimbledon were released on Wednesday and Roger Federer and Serena Williams, both defending champions, will be at the top of the men’s and women’s brackets when the tournament begins on Monday. Federer claimed the top seed despite Rafael Nadal being ranked number one in the world.

Nadal moved into the top spot after winning the French Open, while Federer slipped to No. 2 after losing in the quarterfinals in Paris. Wimbledon uses its discretion to seed players based on their grass-court record.“While the seeding positions of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are reversed from their current rankings, there is no practical effect since they remain the leading seeds in their respective halves of the draw,” Wimbledon referee Andrew Jarrett said.
Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick round out the top five on the men’s side. Giant slayer Robin Soderling was given the sixth seed after his French Open final appearance.
The women’s rankings were consistent with the current WTA world rankings with Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic, and Francesca Schiavone following Serena Williams. Schiavone grabbed the fifth seed after Elena Dementieva withdrew from the tournament with a calf injury. Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin who are both making comebacks after coming out of retirement are ranked eight and 17, respectively.
The Wimbledon draw to complete the bracket will be held on Friday.
