Rare Stephen Strasburg Card Worth a Small House

On Monday the people with Topps/Bowman sent out a release alerting the media to another highly sought after Stephen Strasburg card burning up the market on eBay. In case you missed it the first time around, a card recently sold on the online auction site for $16,043. That figure is small-time compared to the auction currently running.↵↵As of this writing (10:38 a.m. ET), the auction for the card pictured in this post stands at $100,400.00. With 5 days and 10 hours remaining. I was admittedly skeptical about bidding surging to such levels, but if you take a look at the bids, you can see the current high bidder has strong feedback, as do the bulk of the people making up the bidding to this point. ↵
↵↵The card is the 2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg Red autograph card. According to Beckett Blog, it’s the only copy made and signed with that color border. (I loved baseball cards growing up, but think about that for a minute. It has a red border, therefore it is worth $100K+. Your argument is invalid.)↵
↵↵Even with this amount of time left, it’s unlikely -- if not impossible -- that Strasburg will touch the all-time record for a baseball card sale at auction. The current record is the infamous T206 Honus Wagner card, which sold for $2.8 million in 2007. Still, with Strasburg set to take the hill tonight against the Royals it will be interesting to see how his performance either ignites or stalls the bidding. Would another double-digit strikeout outing spark another round of frenetic bidding? With the auction due to end next Monday, we’ll check back for the final results.↵
↵↵On another Strasburg card note, that first card that sold for $16,043? It’s back on the market and already up to $18,500, but the reserve price has not been met. The owner, Robert J. Power, talked about it over on the Beckett Blog.↵
