The Vuvuzela: Coming to SEC Stadiums

↵If we were to compare the SEC and the Big Ten, the former would be the person at the party wearing a lampshade on their head while the latter would be the one reminding you that alcohol can lead to liver disease. In other words, while the Big Ten played Debbie Downer when it comes to vuvuzelas, the SEC, naturally, will not stand in the way of your loud horn blowing.↵↵⇥This instrument, no matter how irritating to some, will not be banned from SEC games this upcoming season, according to the SEC. The instrument of choice in South Africa, which may or may not catch on here in the states, can be brought into stadiums across the league.↵⇥↵⇥The vuvuzela, along with any artificial noisemaker, will fall under the revamped guidelines of the Mississippi State cowbell, according to SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom. Fans are only allowed to use the cowbells (or vuvuzelas) during pregame, between quarters, halftime, timeouts, after scores and during possession changes.↵⇥

↵↵As EDSBS puts its, the SEC tends to be a bit more relaxed on these matters. (I’m not sure if he’s quoting directly from the SEC rulebook here, but it’s worth a second look.)↵↵⇥Now, if LSU wants this to happen it can, since you could take a live gorilla into Tiger Stadium without disguise or subtlety and get away with it as long as he had a ticket or knew the current governor.↵↵As The Slophouse notes above, it remains to be seen whether vuvuzelas actually catch on with SEC fans. I don’t think of heavy crossover between SEC football and World Cup soccer fans, so perhaps many fans will be blissfully unaware and ear drums will be saved across the south. Or maybe it will be a great one-season fad. Pack those ear plugs this season, just to be safe.↵↵(H/T to Get The Picture)↵
