BMW Open, First Round: Dredge, Whiteford Lead In Munich; Sergio Garcia’s Struggles Continue

Bradley Dredge of Wales and Peter Whiteford of Scotland lead all golfers at the BMW International Open in Munich after Thursday’s first round. Both shot 64s, good for eight under par. A pack of four other players shot 65s.

The intriguing story out of Munich is the continued struggles of Spaniard Sergio Garcia who shot a 5-over 77 on the day.

The Spaniard didn’t speak to reporters after his round. He has slumped from second in the world to 36th over the last 15 months, and is worried his run of five straight Ryder Cups is about to end.

“He isn’t enjoying his golf at all at the moment,” said Carlos Rodriguez, Garcia’s manager. “It is not fun for him.

“Sergio has even said that if Colin Montgomerie were willing to offer him a Ryder Cup wild card he’s not sure whether he would be of any help to the European team.”

Ernie Els, the highest ranked player in the field, shot a 2-under.

The course is likely to become more difficult when play resumes on Friday. Munich has been drenched with rain all week and the greens figure to become bumpy with all the player traffic.
