Fractured Thumb Will Send Victor Martinez To DL
Initially it wasn’t certain whether or not Victor Martinez would have to be placed on the DL with his fractured thumb. However, the results of further examination on Monday apparently weren’t good enough, and Martinez will indeed get a break:
Jason Varitek, who’s batted .258/.327/.562, will fill in for Martinez for the duration of his absence.

Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez got some foul tips during Sunday’s game. Foul tips that did some considerable damage:
Nevertheless, while a fractured thumb is never pleasant, the fact that Martinez wasn’t immediately sent to the DL suggests that he may be able to avoid a stint. Martinez will be examined on Monday, at which point the team will decide what to do. Martinez doesn’t believe he’ll need much time off.
