Wimbledon: No. 13 Marion Bartoli Upset By Unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova

2007 Wimbledon finalist No. 13 Marion Bartoli has lost in straight sets to unseeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova, 6-4, 6-4.

Pironkova, who previous to this is best known for her upset win over Venus Williams in the first round of the 2006 Australian Open, will meet Venus again in the quarterfinal.

Before this tournament, Pironkova had never made it past the second round of a grand slam, and had only once won a match at Wimbledon.

Pironkova had long been known as a player capable of giving top players scares in the early rounds of big tournaments, but one rarely able to close out those matches.

Bartoli has only made one grand slam quarterfinal (Australian Open 2009) since that shocking run to the Wimbledon final, though this appearance in the second week is an improvement over her third round exit at Wimbledon in 2009.
