Steelers right tackle Willie Colon injured his achilles working out on Monday morning and, according to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, it's no small injury.
Steelers OT Willie Colon Reportedly Suffers Season-Ending Injury
La Canfora reports the Steelers expect Colon to have season-ending surgery on Wednesday indicating that he did tear his achilles. MRI results are “all but certain to confirm it”, he reports.
The Steelers will start the season with someone other than Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. That player is expected to be the immobile Byron Leftwich, which makes this sting even more.
This is a big blow to the Steelers, who didn’t exactly have a stellar offensive line to begin with.
The Steelers revamped their offensive line, including selecting Maurkice Pouncey in the draft, but now they won't be at full-strength all season.
This likely means that Trai Essex moves from guard to right tackle with Max Starks at left tackle. Pouncey, Justin Hartwig and Chris Kemoeatu will play on the inside.
For Colon, the news is disappointing enough but the fact that it came during a contract year is even more crushing. Colon will be a free agent following 2010 and he was hoping for a long-term deal. If that comes, it won’t be nearly as lucrative as it once could have been.
