For Isner, ‘Top 70’ Would Have Been More Appropriate

John Isner, who you may have heard recently won the longest match ever, has been hitting the talk show circuit harder than any second round loser in history.

His latest stop on the New York part of his tour was a spot on the Late Show With David Letterman to deliver its traditional Top Ten list.

Aside from the jokes, a few things immediately jump out at me.

Firstly, the cameraman is clearly not expecting Isner to be his 6-foot-9 self, and immediately has to adjust to fit the enormous towering North Carolinia native in the frame.

Secondly, the combination of blazer, T-shirt, jeans and sneakers shows that Isner clearly takes his cues for how to dress on TV from Ellen DeGeneres.
And thirdly, whichever producer decided it would be appropriate to give him roses at the end of his bit clearly got mixed up and thought Isner was a Kentucky Derby winner.
The jokes are all pretty solid, except No. 4. Anyone who’s been following Isner’s career knows that he took a set off Federer during their only meeting back at the 2007 US Open.
Not only that, Isner was already full of (drunken) swagger when talking about his chances against Federer before turning pro. During his college days at Georgia, he once instructed friends at a party to come to the US Open and shout “Federer, you ain’t sh-t, John Isner owns you!

This, people, is a man who should be writing his own material.
