The Minnesota Timberwolves technically have enough cap room to make a run at LeBron James, but unless you’re Sam Smith, you know that LeBron would never sign there. The Timberwolves obviously know this, because they have reportedly set their sights on a different free agent small forward: Rudy Gay.
Report: Timberwolves Will Target Rudy Gay First
The Timberwolves will target Memphis restricted free agent Rudy Gay when the NBA’s free agency period begins Wednesday night, according to a league source.
Wolves boss David Kahn on Monday said he will call at 11 p.m. Wednesday two agents he wouldn’t identify and seek to arrange for their clients to visit Target Center and meet with team personnel, including owner Glen Taylor.
If signed, Gay will join a suddenly crowded Timberwolves wing core that includes Corey Brewer and newcomers Wesley Johnson and Martell Webster. Last year, Kahn loaded up on point guards. This year, it appears he’s loading up on wings.
