Politics and sport generally don’t mix, in my opinion - living in Arizona, I’ve had more than enough of that this season, thank you very much. But they can occasionally cross paths, and did so on Tuesday night at Nationals Stadium in Washington, when the Congressional Democrats beat the Republicans by a decisive margin - a supermajority, one might call it - of 13-5.
Democrats Hammer Republicans - On Baseball Field
It was actually a close game initially, with the score tied at four runs apiece after six frames. But the late innings proved a disaster for the Republicans - again, Arizona fans can certainly sympathize with that. Illinois Republican Rep. John Shimkus was lit up like the Fourth of July spectacular, getting touched for nine runs in the seventh, and the Democrats cantered from there to an easy victory.

It’s a Washington tradition - this is the 49th time the game has been played, and the Democrats are on a winning streak, having taken last year’s event as well, by the score of 15-10. The event did benefit a good cause, with the proceeds going to the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, and Jackie Robinson’s widow, Rachel, was also on hand, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
However, the opportunity for political point-scoring was not lost, with Republican team manager, Rep Joe Barton the main target. Some spectators wore yellow jerseys with his name and the slogan “BP’s MVP” on the front and a number one, dripping in oil, on the back. Ouch.
Maybe next year we’ll see Rep. Stephen Strasburg take the field for the Republicans.
