Spain’s David Silva Transfers From Valencia To Manchester City

Valencia's third place finish in La Liga this year and an automatic berth in to the Champions League wasn't enough to get their stars to stick around. David Villa left for Barcelona earlier this month, and on Wednesday David Silva was sold to Manchester City for a reported 30-35 million euros (about $36.7-$42.8 million).

Silva will sign a four-year deal with Man City who continue to stock up on world class talent since Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan bought the team in August 2008. City also signed German international Jerome Boateng in early June. Unlike Villa, Silva will have to wait at least another season for Champions League action as The Citizens finished the EPL season in fifth place.

In the team’s official release, Silva said:

Firstly I would like to thank Valencia as a club and all of their loyal fans, and my team mates there and staff. I have enjoyed six years at Valencia, they discovered me as a footballer and they will always be a special club for me.

The time is right for me to seek a new challenge, and I am thrilled about playing in England with Manchester City. I believe the Premier League is one of the best competitions in the world and I want to bring success to City and win trophies for them.

The 24-year-old midfielder is currently with the Spanish national team in South Africa. Valencia is the only team that Silva has ever been contracted to, though he played for Eibar, a lower level Spanish team, on loan in the 2004-2005 season, and Celta de Vigo the following year. He has been a member of Spain's national team since 2006.
