Javier Aguirre Resigns As Head Coach Of Mexico National Team

Just three days after being eliminated by Argentina in the Round of 16, Javier Aguirre has resigned as the head coach of the Mexican National Team. The loss ensured the Mexicans would fail to reach the quarter finals for the fifth World Cup in a row.

Aguirre was hired to replace Sven-Goran Eriksson in April 2009 after he was let go by Atletico Madrid.

From BBC Sport:

Mexico did well to get out of the group stages but were soundly beaten 3-1 by Argentina in Johannesburg on Sunday, failing to get past the last-16.

"I have to leave, it's the most honest thing to do," said Aguirre.

[...]

He also coached the team in the 2002 World Cup, but was replaced after Mexico were eliminated by the United States.

"Everything I did, I did thinking of the well-being of Mexico."

Aguirre did have success in his second stint with El Tri. He won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009, defeating the United States on their home turf in the final, and his run to the World Cup after taking over for Eriksson was remarkable considering the position Mexico was in before he was hired.

Mexico will now be forced to search for their fifth coach in five years.
