Fantasy Baseball: Thursday’s Roto Roundup

After blowing the call in Armando Galarraga's quest for a perfect game, umpire Jim Joyce was classy enough to walk into the Tigers locker room to apologize to Galarraga. Reports state he had tears in his eyes in the post-game conference. He knew the magnitude of his call, took a look at the replay, and manned up. i respect that. And so should you.

Here are the rest of my thoughts after reviewing Thursday's boxscores:

Galarraga had a great quote after the game last night when asked about Joyce's missed call. He said " nobody's perfect." Well. you were Armando, but you also handled the call with class. Galarraga had every right to lay into Joyce and he did not. Joyce said the same.

Galarraga submitted today's lineup card to home plate umpire Jim Joyce. You could see Joyce was holding back tears as he was reading the lineup cards today. That's all you need to know about how Joyce feels about the blown call.

I haven't wrote much about Dodgers rookie pitcher John Ely, but he is 3-2 in 7 starts this season. But that doesn't tell you how good he has been. He has a 2.54 ERA, 0.935 WHIP, and a 3.74 xFIP. He has a K% of 7.24, a BB% of 1.57 and a K./BB% of 4.63. Sure, it's only 7 starts, but he pitches to contact, mixes up his pitches and keeps hitters off-balance at the plate.

Tigers starter Rick Porcello was a highly sought pitching prospect a few years ago. in 31 starts last season, he won 14 games with a 3.96 ERA. In 170 innings, he struck out just 89 and walked 52. This year he has made 11 starts, winning 4 games with a 5.25 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. He has thrown 62 innings striking out just 28 batters while walking 21. What's to like?

Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson went 4-6 on Thursday with 2 runs scored. He is hitting .341-.387-.463 this season. Brian Cashman has to be second-guessing himself, no?

CC Sabathia did what he is being paid millions to do and beat the Orioles on Thursday. He went 7 innings, giving up 3 runs and striking out 7.

Yankees catcher Jorge Posada batted 6th on Thursday and DH'd. Could he be the Yankees DH for the rest of the season? If so, you have to think his value increases slightly, since he won't be catching daily.

Astros outfielder Carlos Lee went 2-5 with a walk-off two-run HR off of Nationals closer Matt Capps on Thursday. Lee has hit in 7 of his last 10 games with 2 HRs and 10 RBIs.

For the 2nd time in 3 games, both Matt Capps and Matt Lindstrom blew saves in the same game. Lindstrom came on to protect a one run lead and gave up 3 hits and 2 runs, while Capps gave up 3 unearned runs on 2 hits. Had Christian Guzman caught the line drive for the third out, Capps would not have served up the walk-off HR to Carlos Lee. Capps' value is dropping as he has given up runs in 6 of his last 8 appearances.

Here is what SB Nation's Nationals blog-Federal Baseball- had to say about Drew Storen's performance on Thursday:

STOREN WARNING!: It took future Nats' closer Drew Storen five pitches to popJason Michaels up in the sixth, stranding runners on first and third after Nats' starter J.D. Martin had given up a one-out double and two-out single before he was lifted, having throw 5.2 IP in which he surrendered 8 hits, 3 runs, 2 ER, 1 walk and 2 HR's. Storen's back in the seventh, and he walks leadoff batter Michael Bourn and gives up a line drive single to Jeff Keppinger before retiring Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee andHunter Pence without allowing a run to cross...Just making it interesting. It's part of the training...

His time is coming.

A's young starter Brett Anderson recently came off the DL. Well, he may be heading back after injuring his elbow after pitching just 2 innings in Thursday game against the Red Sox. He's made just over 100 pitches since his coming off the DL a few weeks ago.

Marlins starter Josh Johnson pitched 7 strong innings on Thursday giving up just one run on 7 hits and walks, while striking out 8. He is now 6-2 with a 2.10 ERA, and I am kicking myself for trading him in my big money NL-only league earlier this season.
