VIDEO: Umpire Joe West Ejects Ian Desmond, Creates Yet Another Donnybrook

Last weekend, umpire Joe West called a questionable balk on White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle. Buehrle registered his displeasure and was promptly ejected, along with his manager, Ozzie Guillen. The balk debacle (debalkle? no, probably not) resulted in Joe West being fined by the commissioner’s office.

On Friday night, West was at it again.

Here’s how it went down, courtesy of our Nationals blog, Federal Baseball:

First and second, no outs. Ian Desmond lines to left, and it drops in, Hammer scores!! 3-2 Nats. Wil Nieves gets a sac bunt down, Bernadina to third, Desmond to second. Willie Harris flies to short center, Bernadina scores, the throw gets by home and the Reds' pitcher Rosario fields and fires to third, too late to get Desmond, but the Nats' SS's foot comes off the bag and he's tagged by Scott Rolen. From the other side of the field, First Base Ump "Country" Joe West reverses the call after a huddle by the Umps. (ed. note - "It was the right call.") Desmond's tossed for tossing his helmet, Nats' third base coach Pat Listach is furious, and the Nats are up 4-2.

Even if West did make the correct call, he didn’t escape the scorn of Rob Dibble, who said from the broadcast booth that West is “a fossil” and demanded his resignation. And remember, White Sox voice Hawk Harrelson called him “an absolute disgrace” last week. If announcers aren’t careful, they’re going to exhaust their supply of unflattering things to call Joe West. I’m here to help!

A LIST OF UNFLATTERING DESCRIPTORS OF JOE WEST THAT WE HAVE NOT YET UTTERED

- Jerk
- Butthead

This goes to all you folks in the broadcast booth: I know it would be tempting to use all of these at once, but insults are a finite resource. Use them wisely!
