Your Handy Dandy Guide To Identifying The Most Popular Teams In Baseball

Attendance? Pfff. Games on TV? Pahhh. Internet polls? Media attention? Merchandise sales? Tsss, chhh, kuhh. No, that information won’t tell you which teams are MLB’s most popular. They might give you approximations, but if you really want to find out which teams people care about the most - and I know you do - then on today, the first day of the MLB draft, we simply activate the Google Trends machine.

It’s flawless. Every team made at least one pick in either the first or the compensatory round on Monday. Fans of every team, naturally, will be curious about their highest selections. So all we have to do is identify which draft picks are getting Googled the most. The draft picks getting Googled the most are the draft picks in which the most people are interested, and therefore - it’s not too long a leap - the teams that made the most interesting picks are the teams with the most interested fans.

So, it’s the results you want. And, as of a minute ago:

Googletrends_medium

Perhaps that’s too small for you to read. You can click it to make it bigger. Or you can just trust me on this:

2) Cito Culver
3) Jesse Biddle
8) Hayden Simpson
12) Kolbrin Vitek
15) Matt Harvey

Or, if you prefer:

1) Yankees
2) Phillies
3) Cubs
4) Red Sox
5) Mets

Nothing too surprising, but it’s nice to have some further confirmation that nobody cares about the Marlins. Alternate hypothesis: the Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox, and Mets are the most popular teams in baseball, and Hayden Simpson is only up there because the entire world is trying to figure out what in the hell the Cubs were thinking.
