Stephen Strasburg Set To Start Sunday As Jim Riggleman Lays Out Schedule
Via Ben Goessling, we find out that, according to manager Jim Riggleman, Strasburg will be starting every five days - and not every five games - through the All Star break. It’s a move that keeps Strasburg on regular rest at the expense of his fellow rotationers, but then his fellow rotationers aren’t nearly as good, so they can go ahead and suck it up. This could also serve to get Strasburg some more innings, which is good news for a team that’s sitting six games out of the lead.
Anyway, no one cares about my commentary. People care about the schedule. Here’s how it lays out:
6/13: at Cleveland
6/18: vs. Chicago (AL)
6/23: vs. Kansas City
6/28: at Atlanta (HEYWARD HEYWARD HEYWARD HEYWARD)
7/3: vs. New York (NL)
7/8: vs. San Diego
That’s four home dates and two on the road, as opposed to the three and three they’d get if they started Strasburg every five games. As you can imagine, each additional start that Strasburg gets at home means big money for the franchise. It’s also worth noting that, out of Strasburg’s first seven opponents, the Braves are the only team with an actual good offense. This is about as soft a landing as they come.
