Alex Rodriguez homered in the bottom of the 8th in the Yankees 4-2 win Thursday afternoon over the Mariners. Or was it the bottom of the 9th? A-Rod needed a few seconds and teammate confirmation to figure it out.

↵↵“I thought I hit a much bigger home run than I actually did,” Rodriguez said. “I hit it and I looked at A.J. and Pettitte, and they weren’t jumping over the railing. At that point I felt like we probably had one half inning to play. It was pretty embarrassing.”
↵↵Okay, well, that’s not so, so bad. How many times have players mixed up the inning, or how many outs there are? These are the stock-in-trade of baseball bloopers since time immemorial. At the same time, he should probably not follow up that admission by mixing up the dates with a report post-game.
↵↵“We ran into a wave of great pitching on Friday and Saturday,” he said. Then he paused. “Friday and Saturday, right? The last two nights.”
