Remembering George Steinbrenner: A Larger-Than-Life Baseball Icon

↵George Steinbrenner passed away this morning after suffering a heart attack at the age of 80. He hasn’t been an active part of the Yankees brain-trust for the last few years, relinquishing those responsibilities to his sons, but the aura of George Steinbrenner has always been with the Yankees, and will continue for years to come. ↵

↵↵The Old Yankee Stadium may have been the House that Ruth built, but from the mid-70’s until 2008, it was the house that Steinbrenner filled. He never worried about spending his own money to make his team better. Sure, a lot of that money was ill-spent, and many a general manager and manager were canned because of it. But Steinbrenner just seemed to care about winning more than the other owners. He would spare no expense to win, and that’s something – as fans – everyone should be happy to see.↵

↵↵Steinbrenner made the Yankees into an even bigger brand than they had ever been, which is incredible given their long and glorious history in the game, and in the fabric of American history. After a long period of mediocrity, Steinbrenner had enough, sparing no expense to bring glory back to his beloved Yankees. Then, in the 90’s, championships returned. That, of course, led to the creation of a cable network, and eventually a new stadium to fill.↵

↵↵Of course, Steinbrenner was larger-than-life, which is why this clip is how he’ll always be remembered to so many of us.↵
