Timmy Hill finishes 7th in NASCAR K&N West debut

In only his second start ever in a stock car, Timmy Hill drove the Fuel Doctor #99 car to a 7th place finish for Rick Ware Racing in the K&N Pro Series West, King Taco 200 at Irwindale Speedway in California.

“It was an excellent weekend for the team. In our first start, I thought we had a shot at a solid top 10. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for us. This time around, we were able to put everything together and come home with a solid finish. I’m proud of the hard work the guys put in all week,” Hill said after the race.

In a one day show, Hill had two short practice sessions to get acclimated to his new surroundings. After qualifying 22nd, Hill had his work cut out for him. It wasn’t a lack of confidence in his equipment or his abilities that worried Hill.

“I wasn’t concerned with our qualifying position. I knew we had a great race car. I was focused on patiently moving toward the front and not allowing another driver to ruin our day,” Hill said.

It didn’t take Hill long to find his grove in the race, and that grove was the bottom. Conventional wisdom says the fastest way around Irwindale is the top groove. Hill put this into question, making all of his passes on the very bottom.

“I was able to put my left front tire on the apron, and the car just rotated. I might have lost a little on the drive off, but I made up for that getting in and through the middle. The added benefit was not being forced into a single file line at the top. I was able to make my car work where others couldn’t, and that made our night a lot easier. We didn’t have to play follow the leader in the top groove,” Hill stated.

It was a stead, methodical pace to the front for Hill. In veteran form, He took few chances early on and saved his equipment for when it counted. His next start for RWR will come this Saturday in the ARCA Prairie Meadows 200 at the Iowa Speedway in Newton.
