2010 British Open, First Round: Tiger Woods In The Hunt After Shooting 5-Under 67

St. Andrews appears to be the perfect antidote to what was ailing Tiger Woods’ golf game. After struggling with his driving accuracy ever since returning to golf back in April at the Masters, Woods shot a 5-under 67 in the opening round of the 2010 British Open, good for a tie for fifth place. Still, Woods is four shots back of the blistering pace set by wunderkind Rory McIlroy.

Woods fired three birdies on both the front and back nines, with his only bogey on the day coming on the par-4 17th hole. The expansive fairways and relatively tranquil weather at the oft-times blustery ancient home of golf proved to be exactly what Woods needed after a series of less than impressive results the past few weeks leading up to the British Open.

Woods has twice before won British Open titles at St. Andrews, in 2000 and 2005, with the first coming in a particularly historic romp, when Woods set a major title record for lowest score relative to par at 19-under. Woods is currently seeking his 15th major title, as a combination of physical problems, personal issues and general substandard play have conspired to keep him from capturing a major title for over two years -- his last major win came at the 2008 U.S. Open, when he gutted out a memorable playoff win over Rocco Mediate, despite essentially playing on one leg. Woods is chasing Nicklaus’ career record of 18 major championships.
