Magic Keep J.J. Redick, Match Bulls’ Three-Year, $19 Million Offer

J.J. Redick will stay with the Magic, after Orlando matched the Bulls' three-year, $19 million offer for the former Duke sharpshooter, according to Fanhouse's Tim Povtak.

After two more or less disappointing seasons, Redick enjoyed a breakout season of sorts for the Magic this past year. The former lottery pick put in a career-high 9.6 points and 1.9 assists per game, on 40% three-point shooting, as he emerged as a key rotation player for Orlando.

The Bulls tried to lure Redick to Chicago after signing him to a frontloaded offer sheet they hoped the Magic would not match, but Magic GM Otis Smith did not oblige, instead announcing with a blunt "he's staying" that Orlando would indeed retain Redick. The Magic's decision to match a lucrative offer for a role player mirrors what they did last summer in holding on to backup center Marcin Gortat after the Mavs inked him to an offer sheet. The Magic have been rumored to be looking to move Gortat, which could ease the luxury tax burden of keeping Redick, especially after they drafted raw Kentucky big man Daniel Orton in the first round of the draft.
