2010 British Open At St. Andrews, Third Round: Phil Mickelson 1-Under On The Day And Tourney

With the second round stragglers who couldn’t finish their rounds on Friday due to darkness now done, the third round is underway at St. Andrews. Among the early-morning groups, the Royal and Ancient is playing much milder than during yesterday’s afternoon blustery conditions, although not quite as obliging as during Thursday’s blisteringly low rounds. A handful of players are between 1 and 3-under par so far, although these morning groups are substantially off the lead right now, meaning they’ll have to make up quite a bit more ground and/or hope the wind resumes when the current batch of leaders tee off later.

Phil Mickelson is 1-under on the day through seven holes, to bring him to 1-under for the tournament as well. If Mickelson is have a realistic chance on Sunday, he’ll need to make up a few more shots during this penultimate round, and then pray that winds batter the leaders. The British Open has historically been Mickelson’s worst major, with his best finish a solitary third place finish in 2004.

Among other early groups, little-known English journeyman Robert Rock has put in the best round of the day so far with a 5-under 67 to bring him to 3-under on the championship, while Kevin Na is 3-under through seven holes to also come in at 3-under overall.
