The Pirates Tuesday evening plated nine runs in the first inning against the Brewers. For their sake, let’s hope the announcers calling the game don’t get as carried away as the last time the Bucs scored that many in the opening frame.
This Time, Not So Hasty, Pirates Announcers
↵On June 8, 1989, the Pirates put up 10 runs in the top of the first inning facing the Phillies on the road. This seemingly insurmountable lead prompted outspoken Pirates announcer Jim Rooker to proclaim, “If we lose this game, I’ll walk home.”
↵Having been so openly and brazenly dared, the sports gods responded in their predictably cruel fashion. The Phillies went on to win 15-11. Rooker didn’t live up to his boast on that evening, but he did conduct a 300-mile charity walk from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh after the season. Consider this your cautionary tale, Bucs broadcasters.
