Report: Lou Piniella Will Retire As Manager Of Cubs Following 2010 Season

Lou Piniella, who has served as manager of the Cubs since 2007, will announce his retirement effective after this season, this according to a report in the New York Daily News.

Piniella played for 20 seasons in the Majors, for four different teams, with the final 10 years of his career spent with the Yankees, his longest stint with any club.

The 67-year old took over as Cubs manger following a season away from the game and promptly led them to NL Central division titles in both 2007 and 2008, the latter of which earned him NL Manager of the Year honors. However, both years ended with disappointing sweeps in the Division Series. In 2009, the Cubs finished 83-78, good for second in the Central.

This season, the last year on his contract, has been a rough one for Chicago and the fiery, often combative Piniella, as they currently sit 10.5 games out of first with a 42-52 record.

Piniella managed the Yankees (1986-88), Reds (1990-92), Mariners (1993-2002) and Rays (2003-05) before taking over in Chicago. He guided Cincinnati to the 1990 World Series title.
