Superliga 2010 Update: New England, Morelia Advance With Group A Set To Conclude On Wednesday

A pair of 1-0 results in Tuesday’s Superliga action sent the New England Revolution into the next round on top of Group B, Morelia finishing second after the teams’ match in Foxborough.

The result meant Pumas had to score five goals against Chicago (and beat the Fire by four) to advance, but with their loss at Toyota Park, UNAM finishes last in the group.

For New England, it was Marko Perovic (for the second consecutive match) capitalizing on an error in defense to score the match’s only goal. Morelia defender Adrián García’s attempted clearance from inside his own area was meekly hit from the spot to the left of the area, where Perovic was able to run-unto a 12-yard shot that beat Yair Urbina far post.

It was the third consecutive 1-0 victory for New England, winning them Group B with nine points.

The one goal loss for Morelia meant Monarcas had virtually clinched second place, and with Wilman Conde’s header in the first half converting a corner kick in Chicago’s match against Pumas, the Fire had enough to climb out of last place and give Morelia their berth in the next round.

Tonight group play wraps-up, with Houston hosting Puebla and Pachuca visiting Chivas USA in Group A play. Puebla sits atop the group with six points and needs only a draw to secure first place, while a win for Houston would put them atop Group B with seven points.

Should the Dynamo get a point, they would eliminate Chivas USA, who need a Dynamo loss and a win over Pachuca to pull even on points and give themselves a chance to advance on a tie-breaker.
