Second College Baseball Player Attacked By Shark

Do college baseball pitchers taste good? I ask this because, after the story earlier this month, in which Reds draft pick Chad Rogers was bitten by a shark off the Galveston coast, another college pitcher has been attacked. This time, it was University of North Florida hurler, Clayton Schulz, bitten while surfing at Jacksonville Beach. “I was hopping back on my board and the shark came up and grabbed my foot and shook it around a little it and let go,” he said.

He made it back to shore without further incident, but on exiting the water, his girlfriend Medan Hudack saw what the resulting damage looked like. “Not a foot to be honest, I didn’t even really want to look at it that much, because I don’t have a strong stomach. But it looked pretty bad when I first saw it.” Schultz ended up needing 400 stitches, but is expected to make a full recovery.

I must admit, I initially thought when I saw the story, that it was just more coverage of the same incident. I mean, what are the odds of two college pitchers getting their feet chewed-up, while surfing, within a month of each other? The International Shark Attack File says there were a total of only 42 "unprovoked" incidents in US waters during 2008, so it does seem odd to have two such similar ones in a short space of time.

As with Rogers, it doesn’t appear to have put Schulz off surfing. “I’m sure I’ll be back out there. My neck might be turning a little bit, looking around and stuff, but I’m sure I’ll be back out there as soon as I can,” said the victim. He also hopes to be back on the pitching mound in time for the start of the season. I’m sure Schulz’s curve-ball will have more bite to it, and he’ll find himself “fin” the zone...
