Broadway Bound: Alexander Frolov Finally Signs, Choose New York Rangers

Cross Alexander Frolov's name off the list of remaining NHL free agents.

The New York Rangers have signed the Russian forward to a one-year deal worth $3 million. Although he had a sour season in Los Angeles, to the point where coach Terry Murray criticized his ambition and sat him as a healthy scratch, Rangers GM Glen Sather is pleased to have added his talents.

From TSN:

“Alex is a highly skilled player who we feel will play a key role in improving our offense and play in all situations,” Sather said in a statement. “He is strong competitor and has the ability to play either wing position.”

Frolov’s production took a dip for the third consecutive season in 2010, as he registered his lowest point total (51) since his sophomore year and failed to reach 20 goals for just the second time in his career. Reports hint that he ignored a four-year offer worth $20 million from the KHL, with his agent claiming he desired one more year in North America prior to any long-term decisions.

Jim Schmiedeberg of Blueshirt Banter is satisfied with the acquisition:

One year, 3 million dollars. I’m ok with this, they had to find some offense out there, hopefully Frolov can help, and if not, well they are only on the hook for a year, the Rangers may not have to pawn him off to Sutter in Calgary.

A change of scenery may be the proper prescription for getting Frolov back to his capabilities which is 30 goals and 60-plus points. For more, check out Blueshirt Banter.
