In the final hours before the trade deadline, the Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be making the strongest push for Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly. From the L.A. Times:
MLB Trade Rumors: Dodgers Now Front-Runners To Land Ted Lilly
The Dodgers and Cubs have discussed a potential deal that would send Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot to Los Angeles, but one source indicated that the Dodgers might be focused on acquiring only Lilly.
It isn’t known what the Dodgers would give the Cubs.
For the time being, the Yankees, who were in the Lilly conversation for a time, appear to be less interested.
Lilly’s contract expires at the end of the season. The 34-year-old southpaw experienced a breakout year in 2009, posting a 3.10 ERA with a 1.056 WHIP. This season, his numbers remain solid -- he holds a 3-8 record with the Cubs, but has a 3.69 ERA in 117 innings pitched.
The 54-49 Dodgers are currently seven games removed from the N.L. West-leading San Diego Padres. Though Lilly could certainly help the Dodgers’ starting rotation, it seems that their bullpen is more in need of help.
