Glen Coffee’s sudden retirement from football at age 23 has stunned the football world. It’s not entirely unusual for players to give up the sport, but Coffee’s reasoning is unclear and his production in 2009 (226 yards and a touchdown) suggested he could have made him a decent backup to Frank Gore going forward. But Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald suggests Coffee may give up being a gridiron gladiator to follow a calling.
Is Glen Coffee Retiring From Football To Preach?
↵Having covered 49ers RB Glen Coffee for 3 years, not surprised he retired. He has a higher call. Wouldn’t shock me if he headed to ministry↵Of course, that Rapoport tweet doesn’t mean that Coffee’s only reason for quitting is the opportunity to minister, just that it’s a logical path. (Update: Coffee did tell the Sacramento Bee that his decision was partly due to his faith: “His will, I felt, wasn’t football,” Coffee said.) If Coffee wants to preach, though, that’s the sort of speaking-intensive vocation that doesn’t mix well with the effects of repeated concussions. Coffee might well have seen career backup as the end of his football road, and decided to find an exit before the on-ramp to a higher one became too tough to take.
