Tiger, Phil Rally Early, But It’s Probably Too Little, Too Late

Neither Tiger Woods nor Phil Mickelson was in position to win the PGA Championship entering today’s final round. But each has done a bit of work early.

Woods made birdies on his first two holes and three of his first four to move to 5-under overall, and he has more room to make up ground on leader Nick Watney than Mickelson does. Tiger’s still eight shots behind Watney, though, and despite being 5-under over his last 12 holes, he’ll need a miracle to contend. It would be Woods’ first win at a major after being behind through 54 holes.

Mickelson is a bit hotter, but he has further to go. He was just 1-under entering today’s round, but an eagle at the fifth hole and two birdies have gotten his final round off to a good start. He’s 3-under through seven holes and 4-under for the tournament, and trails Watney by nine strokes. If Tiger needs a miracle, Lefty could use a bigger one.

And both will need a few catastrophic rounds by the leaders to have any realistic hopes of holding the Wanamaker Trophy at day’s end.
