The first hole at Whistling Straits is benign. It should be a long iron off the tee and a mid iron into the green. But the simple hole proved dramatic for the final groups.
2010 PGA Championship: Game On! Nick Watney Double Bogeys First Hole
Rory McIlroy began his round with driver off the tee, leaving it in a fairway bunker with an awkward lie. He skied the green by some forty yards in a bunker behind the green. Incredibly, McIlroy hit the long bunker shot to a few feet for what became an all-world par.
Meanwhile, Nick Watney was not so lucky. Hitting a sand wedge into the green after a decent drive, Watney came up a full club short. He hit a poor bunker shot, and eventually made double bogey.
His playing partner, Dustin Johnson, hit a great driver, flip sand wedge, and made an easy birdie. They both share the lead now on 11-under par.
