As reported by the Orange County Register, the Twins have landed closer Brian Fuentes in a trade with the Angels, who will receive a player to be named later.
Brian Fuentes Traded To Twins; Angels To Receive Player To Be Named Later
Angels general manager Tony Reagins told Bill Plunkett that the player would be named soon, and he described him as a "prospect with upside."
Fuentes, 34, recorded 23 saves and a 3.48 ERA for the Angels this season. The Twins, who have been without star closer Joe Nathan, have used Jon Rauch and midseason addition Matt Capps as their closers this year, with good success, and Fuentes is expected to offer just another late-inning veteran option. That Fuentes is left-handed will get him into some critical situations.
Entering Friday night's action, the Twins hold a 3.5-game lead over the White Sox in the A.L. Central.
Fuentes is due just about $2 million over the rest of the year, and will be a free agent come the winter.
