With Carlos Santana Injury, Cleveland Once Again Reminded Of Her Place In The World

As is well documented, the last few years haven’t been kind to Cleveland sports fans. The Browns are terrible, the Indians are in a complete rebuild, and, umm, something happened with LeBron James last month. On Monday night, another dagger came, as the Indians’ spectacular rookie catcher Carlos Santana appeared to suffer a serious injury in a home plate collision with Boston’s Ryan Kalish.
Santana has been a nice bright spot for Tribe fans this season. A product of a 2008 trade that sent Casey Blake to the Dodgers, Santana posted an .880 OPS in his first 45 games in the Major Leagues. For a 24 year old catcher, that’s a really nice number. Santana hasn’t resonated nationally because a) he plays on a bad Indians team and b) there’s only so much rookie phenom hype to go around. Of course it’s only 45 games, but Santana has essentially shown up in Cleveland as the best catcher in the AL this year. To potentially lose Santana for a very long time because of a freak injury (horrific gif here, if you are so inclined) would be an extremely tough blow for a fanbase in desperate need of something positive.

Needless to say, the in-game comments at Lets Go Tribe were exactly what you might expect.

Besides instant death, this is probably the worst thing I could possibly imagine happening tonight.

Cursed

Freaking figures.

And:

I hate my life right now.

Why doesn’t this happen to Jeter or Pedroia? I know wishing injury upon someone is a terrible thing to do, but damnit … why Santana of all people???

I don’t know if I like baseball anymore

Finally, when reports of a relatively promising test result (it might be just a twisted knee) came in:

Somewhat promising. Though you have to remind yourself, it’s Cleveland…
