PGA Tour Suspends Pro-Am Rule That Disqualified Jim Furyk From The Barclays

The decision came a week too late to help Jim Furyk, but PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem on Tuesday suspended the rule that knocked Furyk out of The Barclays.

Furyk, if you recall from last Wednesday, overslept and missed his pro-am tee time, which resulted in him getting disqualified from the Barclays the day before it started. It cost him five spots in the FedEx Cup Standings, as he dropped from third to eighth. He also missed his shot at getting a cut of the $7.5 million Barclays purse; the winner, Matt Kuchar, took home $1,350,000.00. According to the New York Times, Furyk could lose as much as $5 million by the end of the season; that’s the difference between first and second place in the PGA Tour’s playoff system.

In his announcement on Tuesday, Finchem said he asked the Player Advisory Council and the Player Directors to examine the regulations associated with pro-am participation and obligations. The rules will be a topic at the Policy Board meeting in November, according to the PGA Tour.

Furyk released a statement at T.P.C. Boston, site of the Deutsche Bank Championship this weekend:

“I am glad the PGA Tour has changed the rule surrounding my disqualification from last week’s Barclays Championship. Pro-ams are an integral part of our success out here on the PGA Tour but I’m extremely pleased that commissioner Finchem and the Tour staff has reacted swiftly and modified the rule.”
