The lightning delay kept Oregon and Tennessee under cover in Knoxville for more than an hour. Tennessee’s punishing running game kept Oregon off the field for much of the first half. But at half’s end, it was still a tie game, thanks to the Ducks’ potent attack.
After Weathering Storm, Vols’ Poole, Ducks Find Their Footing
After kicking two pre-delay field goals to take a 6-0 lead, Tennessee turned to Tauren Poole to dominate the first quarter. The Vols churned out 196 yards in the period, Poole gaining 119 of those on the ground, and the junior running back scored a touchdown early in the second quarter to make it 13-3.
But then Oregon started to solve Justin Wilcox’s defense, and a field goal and a perfectly weighted Darron Thomas pass to David Paulson late in the second gave Oregon a tie heading into the half.
If nothing else, Tennessee has at least completely outclassed New Mexico. At halftime last week, the Ducks were up 59-0.
